In the moments following a car accident, your mind is racing with a million questions. Is my car okay? Where can I get it fixed? Will insurance cover everything? How am I going to go anywhere in the meantime? Often, the last question that comes to mind is “Am I hurt?”
Even if you are just sore, you should get checked out immediately. You may experience pain, numbness, headaches, muscle stiffness, fatigue and other problems (including arthritis) for a prolonged period of time after the incident. Remember, nothing is as important as your health, especially when you start to lose it.
So many times, we make excuses that hinder our well being. Well, it was just a fender bender and my car only sustained minor damage. There is no way I got hurt, right? Wrong! Documented studies done by Charles Carrroll, M.D., Paul McAtee, M.D. and Lee Riley, M.D. revealed that: “The amount of damage to the automobile bears little relation to the force applied to the cervical spine (neck) of the occupants.” In other words, the damage to the passengers is not necessarily directly related to the damage to the vehicle. While your bumper might have only “kissed” another bumper, your neck might have sustained an injury.
Even if you have gone to the hospital following an accident, you may need to see a chiropractor as well. The hospital will check vital signs, make sure you have no life-threatening conditions and release the patient with some pain management medications. What they do not do is treat the underlying injuries that can often lead to future chronic pain. The prescribed pain management medication will not correct structural or soft tissue damage, it will only mask the pain and inflammation.
Did you know that while you may not experience the obvious symptoms of post accident trauma (muscle stiffness and pain), you can experience other symptoms that may point to a spinal alignment injury. Headaches, difficulty sleeping, memory loss, fatigue and irritability are just a few symptoms that might mean you have an injury. A common complaint of auto accident victims is that they just don’t feel like themselves.
If you are experiencing pain after an automobile accident and have been given a clean bill of health at the hospital or your Dr’s office, please get a second opinion with a chiropractor. There are special drug-free therapies designed to correct the structural and soft tissue damage associated with post accident body pain, i.e. whiplash. Here at Chambers Chiropractic and Acupuncture, we effectively treat these injuries everyday. We understand the detection of hidden injuries and have developed a specialized treatment plan that can have you symptom free in a short period of time.
